BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Margaret Nosek, Ph.D.

Biographical Information

Nosek is an internationally recognized authority on independent living for persons with disabilities and issues related to women with physical disabilities. She is Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In addition to directing the department's Center for Research on Women with Disabilities, she serves as Director of Research for the ILRU Research and Training Center on Independent Living at The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research. Dr. Nosek is a 1984 graduate of The University of Texas at Austin with a doctorate in rehabilitation research. She has held offices in several national professional organizations.

Her research and writing have focused on independence, personal assistance services, independent living program operations and management, public policy, and sexuality and health concerns of women with physical disabilities. Under funding by the National Institutes of Health, she has conducted the first major national study of women with physical disabilities. She has produced 31 articles for publication in refereed academic journals, 12 chapters for books on rehabilitation-related topics, 8 monographs on independent living research, and given invited presentations at 67 national and 22 international conferences.

She lectures widely on independent living issues and the concerns of women with disabilities, and has completed two lecture tours of Japan. As a person with a severe physical disability, she has been a pioneer and activist in the disability rights movement, including vigorously supporting passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The president's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities has honored her as a "Disability Patriot."
