Patient Care Activities at the
Harris County Hospital District

Ben Taub General Hospital houses 147 internal medicine beds among its 578 total hospital operating beds. Of these internal medicine beds, 24 are MICU/CCU beds and 20 are beds in the step-down units. Additionally, Quentin Mease Community Hospital has a Skilled Nursing Unit with 25 beds. The Intensive Care Unit of Ben Taub is an area of clinical excellence.

The faculty and residents care for 16, 000 internal medicine outpatient visits per year. There are 35 full-time members of the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine who work primarily at Ben Taub General Hospital. Many other members of the Department are involved in professional activities on a part-time basis.

The Geriatric Program at Quentin Mease Community Hospital is an innovative new program that promotes independence in senior citizens. Physicians, geriatric nurses, social workers, and pharmacists work in tandem to provide comprehensive care for the geriatric patient.

The Ben Taub Emergency Center is widely recognized for providing outstanding care to acutely ill medical and surgical patients. More than 100,000 patients are treated in this facility each year. The Emergency Center serves as the hub of Houston's emergency care system, and is staffed by Baylor faculty and residents on a 24-hour basis.

Several aspects of Ben Taub's patient make-up and geographical location make the hospital a unique facility. As a public hospital administered by the Harris County Hospital District, it provides hospital care and health services to indigent citizens of Harris County, which encompasses the city of Houston and has a population of more than 2.8 million people. The patient population presents a wide spectrum of fascinating and challenging medical problems, and the patients themselves are ethnically very diverse and span all age groups.
