The Section of Pediatric Cardiology at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine is one of the largest in the world, with expertise in all areas of clinical cardiology and a productive research program. The Section of Pediatric Cardiology serves the children of Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, as well as children across the United States, and around the world.
The mission of the Section of Pediatric Cardiology is to provide excellent service to families and referring physicians, to discover a new understanding of the causes of heart disease in children, to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic methods, and to improve the outcomes and lifestyles of children with heart disease. In addition, the section provides continuing care to young adults with congenital heart disease.
Pediatric cardiology at Texas Children’s and Baylor College of Medicine has had an illustrious history of excellence since its beginnings in the 1950s with Chief of Cardiology Dr. Dan G. McNamara, Chief of Cardiac Surgery Dr. Denton A. Cooley, and Chief of Cardiac Anesthesia Dr. Arthur S. Keats. Inventions and discoveries by faculty of our group have been noteworthy since our early beginnings including the first transplant in a small child, the development of pediatric electrophysiology, inventions in cardiac catheterization and intervention, and the discovery of disease-causing genes and viral markers of acquired heart disease.
Today, the Heart Center at Texas Children’s under the leadership of Chief of Pediatric Cardiology Dr. Jeffrey A. Towbin, Chief of Congenital Heart Surgery Dr. Charles D. Fraser, and Chief of Cardiac Anesthesiology Dr. Dean Androppulos offers leading-edge care of children and young adults with heart disease and cutting-edge scientific discovery. Voted one of the three best pediatric cardiology programs in the United States by Child Magazine, the section offers state-of-the-art expertise in cardiac catheterization and intervention, noninvasive imaging, cardiac critical care, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac transplantation, cardiomyopathy and heart failure, adult congenital heart disease, and cardiovascular genetics.
In addition, the Section of Pediatric Cardiology offers cutting-edge basic science research on the genetic basis of congenital heart disease, sudden cardiac death, heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathies), and arrhythmias, as well as the causes of inflammatory heart disease. This work has led to novel diagnostic tests performed in the CLIA/CAP-certified John Welsh Cardiovascular Diagnostic Laboratory, as well as new treatments. Along with a surgical team that boasts a 2 percent mortality for all surgeries performed, The Heart Center at Texas Children's remains a world-renowned center for the care of children and young adults with heart disease.
